A Loretto Junior School pupil displayed remarkable speed and skill when he won a 2nd place at a prestigious national Loretto Fencingfencing tournament.

Murray Caughey, aged 11, took on numerous competitors representing over 30 different schools to defend Loretto’s honour at the IAPS (Independent Association of Preparatory Schools) Fencing Competition held at Millfield School in Somerset recently.

Murray fought exceptionally well, winning all but two of his matches, beating the top seed along the way and securing a 2nd place overall in the Foil final.

The competition was particularly strong with many of the other competitors being Great Britain fencing cadets.

Murray commented, “There were hundreds of competitors at this competition and it was a little scary at first. However, I stayed focused and tried my very best.”

“We are very proud of Murray’s success. Bringing home a silver medal is a huge achievement in the face of such tough opposition. I do commend Murray for his endeavours,” said Mr Jonathan Hewat, Director of External Affairs at Loretto School.
