The Royal Society of Chemists held an analytical competition at Herriot- Watt University on Monday 4 March. Loretto Loretto School Science Triumph School entered a team of three L6, Fraser Barrie, Hamish Lamotte and Miranda Smith.

Their practical skills were tested to the full in three separate experiments involving chromatography, titrations and spectrophotometry under strict time constraints, they had to work as a team in order to complete the project and to correctly analyse the unknown chemicals their mathematical skills were tested to the full.

The competition was open to Lower and Upper sixth form pupils from all Scottish schools and the Loretto team were placed a very respectable third.

This was a fantastic result and the participants are to be highly commended.
