LORETTO School pupils made the pilgrimage to the battlefields of northern Europe and visited the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial in Ypres, Belgium dedicated to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown.
Six Loretto pipers performed at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium. Lawrence Bissell (13 from Inveresk), James Shaw (12 from Haddington), Hannah Coleman (12 from Musselburgh), Rory Morgan (12 from Stenton), Lorne Robb (13 from Humbie) and Edmund Wood (12 from Musselburgh) joined buglers from the fire service in Ypres in playing at the daily evening service at the Menin Gate, which bears the names of 54,896 Commonwealth servicemen.
Loretto pupils, Kate MacKay (12 from Haddington) and Sam Hewitson (12 from Wallyford) were the first to lay a wreath at the memorial.
The Last Post Association has very warm memories of Loretto visit five years ago when pupils also performed at the ceremony. Loretto School has been asked to take part in a series of major events taking place over the centenary of the Great War 2014-18.
