A PICTURE of a dragon has won Loretto Junior School pupil, George Clynes third place in a national children’s art Lorettocompetition.

9 year-old George from Archerfield, East Lothian was chosen as a top three winner in the Primary 4-7 category of the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools, a national competition attracting over 11,000 entries.

George was present at a special awards ceremony in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh to see his work go on display to the public for the first time. George's work will be on show at the gallery until October 27.

The competition was set up ten years ago by the Galleries to excite and inspire young people and to extend their knowledge of the Scottish national art collection.

The theme of the competition was 'Scary Monsters and Creepy Things', inspired by Agnes Miller Parker's 1934 wood engraving, 'The Challenge'. Adding extra excitement, designs from the competition will be used by Scottish National Ballet to inspire set designs for their upcoming winter show, 'Hansel and Gretel'.

Jonathan Hewat, Director of External Affairs at Loretto School, said, "George's picture is magnificent and we do congratulate him on the selection of his picture as one of the prize winners. It is the dream of many an aspiring artist to have their work on display at the Scottish National Gallery. George has managed this through his creativity, imagination and commitment."
