Loretto School is a gallery in itself. The art around the school founded in 1827 is exclusively the work of students Loretto spotlight artpast and present. Pictures by students as young as 4 grace the walls of the institution and there is even now a dedicated gallery for the very best student work.

Kirkwood Gallery in the Seventeenth Century Pinkie House (part of the Senior School) is open only to the school; however the public can visit on select occasions during the year.

The school facilities match it’s ethos of presenting art as part of the school culture. There are six dedicated studios, a dedicated ceramics workshop, sculpture studio and printmaking. The department, led by Madeline Bonner in the Senior School and Sarah Kettlewell in The Nippers (The Junior School) is unapologetic about its focus on fine art, although there is always room to manoeuvre.

There is Specialist teaching in Fine Art, Ceramics and Sculpture, Life Drawing and Textiles and the seniors will eventually follow the rigorous A-level course.

This has led to great success for former students who have gone on to study at places like Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art, Leeds College of Art, Central Saint Martins, Camberwell School of Art and Cooper Union New York.

loretto artThe department does like to get further afield and students have been whisked off to London and Rome during the last year to experience the art and architecture first-hand as part of the Art and History of Art A-Levels. Gallery visits and workshops with working artists are Loretto art ballettimportant part of the curriculum too.

The school has welcomed welcomed local artists Calvin McCluskey, Darren Woodhead, Charlotte Cadzow, Gaynor Boggon and Tandra Chanda from Kolkata. (The Nippers have established links with Green Wave Centre for Visual Arts in Kolkata.)

The Nippers engages with the community too with Holiday club art workshops for children from 4 – 12 and evening class for parents which are now in their third year. Everything from mixed media landscape to life drawing is taught.
