A team of four Sixth Form girls from MSJ triumphed at the Senior Maths Team Challenge Regional Final hosted by Malvern College, on 14th November. The competition is jointly organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) and the Further Maths Support Programme.

Flying the flag for girls’ abilities in this subject, Ting Mao, Sandy Chen, Yini Yan and Clare Yong competed against very strong teams from eight other schools from the local area, including Malvern College, Dyson Perrins, RGS and Kings in Worcester and Dean Close in Cheltenham. Out of 36 competitors on the day, nine were girls, including the team of four from MSJ.

There were three rounds in the hard fought competition, which included group work, numerical puzzles and a fast and tense round against the clock! The team from MSJ excelled at each task, decisively winning each round. They have now been invited to the National Final in London on 5th February 2013.

Hot on the heels of this success, eight girls from Malvern St James Sixth Form excelled in another national maths competition organised by the UKMT, the Senior Individual Maths Challenge.

After successfully completing a 90 minute paper, the eight girls from MSJ gained sufficient marks to qualify for the follow up rounds. The first of which (The British Maths Olympiad and the Senior Kangaroo paper) take place on Friday 30th November.
