Malvern St James Girl’s School recently hosted its annual Junior Schools’ Art Exhibition.

The event featured over 100 pieces of art created by children from many local schools: Malvern St James, Abberley Hall School, Airthrie School, Berkhampstead School, Bosbury Primary School, Colwall CofE Primary School, The Croft Preparatory School, The Elms School and and Hatherop Castle School.

Children from reception to year 8 created pieces using different resources on a range of topics, including Elmer the Elephant, the Titanic and self-portraits. Algy Orchard from Abberley Hall School won the ‘Best in Exhibition’ prize for his piece inspired by the work of David Hockney.

Antony Bridge, local artist and the current artist in residence at the National Trust’s Croome, judged the pieces and said: “I was honoured to be asked to judge the Malvern St James art exhibition. The work from all the schools involved was both stunning and inspiring. I also savoured a guided tour of the Malvern St James Art studios, a great asset for the school with that real art studio look.”

Di Weissberg, head of art and design at Malvern St James, added: “The standard and breadth of art in the exhibition was fabulous and it was wonderful to see so many visitors enjoying the children’s creations.”

Olivera Raraty, headmistress at the school, commented: “Children are so creative and it is always a joy to see how they interpret the world. At Malvern St James we nurture a child’s ‘whole self’ and I am a passionate believer that creativity and academic achievement go hand in hand.”
