Last Tuesday all Year 7 and 8 left their classrooms behind to visit the Corinium Museum in Cirencester and Malvern St JamesChedworth Villa.

Roman Cirencester, or Corinium, was the second largest town in Roman Britain and the Corinium Museum is home to one of the largest collections of Romano-British antiquities in the country.

Girls were able to experience life as a Roman and marvel at the world class mosaics, visit a Roman Garden and reconstructed rooms, as well as examine smaller objects like jewelry and the famous Christian acrostic.

Girls enjoyed an interactive workshop, investigating the evidence to discover what life was like for four individual Romans. They looked at replica artefacts and translated their tombstones.

Next on their itinerary was a visit to Chedworth Roman Villa, which was home to some of the richest people in the country during its heyday in the 4th century.

Everyone enjoyed an interesting guided tour and saw mosaics, in situ, some of which were excavated just this year.

The tour included a bath house, latrine, hypocausts and the shrine, as well as many descendants of Roman snails, which were out in force due to the damp conditions!

Alex Knapper, Year 8, said, “I really enjoyed the whole Latin trip. I learned a lot about Roman life and I also had a lot of fun.”
Malvern St James
Eve Garland Hellewell, Year 8, agreed, “I loved looking at the mosaics and Roman artefacts because it made you feel like you were really back in Roman times. It’s amazing to know what life was like for people who lived so long ago.”
