Merchiston Castle School pupil Jay YoungerMerchiston is delighted to announce that pupil Jay Younger has become a senior athletics internationalist, whilst he is still at School. Jay is only 18 years old and competed for Scotland’s senior men’s athletics team at Loughborough University yesterday. Jay recorded a PB of 48.05s and ran against some of the UK’s top 400m runners. Jay follows in the footsteps of Merchiston’s last senior internationalist, Oli Hairs, who played for Scotland’s senior cricket team in 2010. The School’s previous recorded internationalist whilst still at school was WG Neilson in 1894 for rugby.

Jay secured his place at the Loughborough event by winning the Under 20 Scottish East District Championships a week prior where he finished second in the senior race in windy conditions. This is the latest achievement for the Musselburgh-based teenager who has already achieved a number of significant accolades including being named Scottish Under 17 Athlete of the Year in October 2010 and winning the Scottish Under 18 400m Championships in 2011.

Merchiston is delighted with Jay’s fantastic achievement which is also a new School Record. Headmaster, Andrew Hunter, commented, “This is an outstanding achievement and I am thrilled for Jay who has worked incredibly hard in his young career. Jay deserves this recognition of his talent which we have always sought to nurture alongside his academic work.”
