Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh Cancer researchCancer Research UK fundraiser, Matt Wallace, thrilled pupils in Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh today as he took time out of a trek from John O’Groats to Lands End to talk at a junior assembly.

After losing a close friend to cancer, Matt quit his job on his 30th birthday to walk the length of the country to raise awareness and support for Cancer Research UK. Matt is also visiting 16 cancer research centres across the country along the way. Matt is walking with no support crew, carrying everything he needs, in a pack on his back.

Merchiston parent, Bev Harrow, read about Matt’s walk in the local press and offered Matt accommodation in her house. ''I was just reading about Matt and looked up to see an absolute monsoon going over St Andrews. I thought that I wouldn't want one of my family or friends camping out in that.''

Matt’s challenge captured Merchiston’s attention so the School joined Bev in supporting Matt while he was in Edinburgh. Matt shared in a junior assembly this morning. Pupils were struck as they heard about Matt’s impressive challenge and enjoyed a Q and A session with him.

Having walked an average of 15 miles per day, the School was aware of Matt’s great need for a new pair of boots and was delighted to present him with a brand new pair.

Headmaster, Andrew Hunter, commented: “Merchiston pupils are fortunate to meet some very inspiring characters who visit the School. Matt is no exception and his ‘just do it’ attitude is very refreshing for the boys to hear. We wish him every success with his walk across the UK”

Another Merchiston parent whose family had been directly affected by cancer passed Matt an additional donation for Cancer Research UK.

Matt commented, “I would like to thank Merchiston for all the kindness and support they have shown me during my short stay in Edinburgh. The donation of the boots was extremely generous.”
