96% pass rate at A*- C grades for A level
4 pupils accepted at Oxbridge

Merchiston Castle Exam success and university destinationsWe are pleased with our Upper Sixth pupils’ performance in A level examinations this summer: the A*-C grade pass-rate was at 96% for the second year running—the School’s best-ever tally at these grades. This year was the third in which exam boards awarded the highly prestigious A* grade to candidates who scored over 90% in their final-year units, and Merchiston is pleased to report a 21% A* grade performance this summer.

Merchiston is delighted with its 2012 leavers’ success in applications for Higher Education courses. Of our 69 applicants who gained offers, 62% gained grades which enabled them to take up offers at their first choice of university course and 84% of applicants secured their offers from either their first or second choice courses.

Twenty-four universities form the ‘Russell Group’ of selective universities: 46% of Merchiston applicants this year took up places at ‘Russell Group’ universities.

Additionally, four Merchiston pupils have secured places at Cambridge University for next academic year to read Engineering and Natural Sciences.
There was once again a buzz of excitement at School as Fifth Form pupils learned their GCSE examination results.
There were many happy faces: Merchiston’s GCSE pass rate A*-C this year was 97%. Moreover, of the 570 individual candidate results 370 (65%) gained grades A*/A; the School’s combined A*, A, and B grade pass rate was a highly gratifying 91%: this is Merchiston's best ever set of GCSE results at these three top grades.
