Merchiston Castle School is delighted to be named as the number 1 school in Scotland according to the Independent Merchiston CastleSchools’ Golf Association school rankings for 2012/13.

The Edinburgh based school is also listed as number 4 in the UK. Outstanding young talent, Calum Hill, has been ranked as first in the UK for ISGA Individual Rankings 2012/13. These accolades are particularly impressive, given that the Golf Academy at Merchiston only launched in 2011.

The Autumn Term saw Merchiston claiming three major tournament victories at three different age groups (U13s, U15s and U18s). Tomás, Calum and Morgan finished first overall for their nett score to win the ISGA Scottish Open 5-4. Calum won individual honours, with an excellent score of 70 and earlier in the term. The junior teams are also playing very well and we congratulate Max, on his achievement in the ISGA U15 Scottish Open. He secured the final point in the very creditable victory over the Golf Fit Team, 4-3.

The U13s team of Jamie, Kayau and Rory claimed the school hat-trick; winning the Loretto Junior Golf Championship and taking home the prestigious Simmers Cup. With over 100 boys and girls playing from schools across Scotland, the competition was strong. Individually, Rory, aged 12, had an excellent gross score of 86, taking first place in the individual nett stableford competition.

Merchiston also played in the most recognized ISGA tournament in the UK, The Shire Trophy this week and were the only Scottish School, playing alongside well known English schools, such as Harrow, Shrewsbury, Wellington College and Winchester. The U14 Golf Team won the tournament and pupil, Ronan, was the UK Nett Winner.

18 year old Calum from North Berwick plays off a handicap of 0.5 His record since joining Merchiston speaks for itself:

Calum commented, "I am absolutely delighted with all I have been able to achieve at Merchiston. I have to thank Merchiston Golf Academy for running an incredible golf programme in Edinburgh where my golf, under the instruction of Alan Murdoch, has really taken my game to a different level. Alan has helped me technically, instilled a belief and taught me how to compete. Golf Fit coach Craig Tumblety, who works with all of the Golf Academy boys, must take a huge amount of credit too. I have worked with Craig for four years which has been invaluable."

Calum has signed a letter of intent to enrol at the University of Louisiana, Monroe, USA in the Autumn Semester 2013.
