Ruth Davidson Merchiston Castle SchoolMerchiston Castle School was delighted to welcome the Leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist party, Ruth Davidson, to the School yesterday. Merchiston pupils studying A level Government and Politics were joined by pupils from other Edinburgh schools to hear Ms Davidson speak briefly about the future of her party before she answered questions. A vast variety of topics was raised including the independence debate, university fees, prison sentencing and welfare reform.

The pupils offered insightful comments and had some challenging questions for Ms Davidson. This event followed a lively debate with Gordon MacDonald, the SNP constituency MSP for Edinburgh Pentlands at Merchiston last week. Merchiston pupils and staff commented on the character of both politicians who both showed great openness in being willing to answer all questions and related well to pupils.

For pupils who are fresh from studying Political ideologies, events like this act as an invaluable insight into how Politics works at the coalface, but for all attendees it gives them a unique opportunity to question, at close quarters, some of the people involved in making the decisions that affect the whole of Scotland at every level. Merchiston hopes that these events will not only give insight into the workings of Politics in Scotland, but will also stir up enthusiasm and curiosity for finding out more, not just in academic work but also in the wider world.
