Merchiston_Tennis_Win_Ageon_regional_FinalsMerchiston’s U15 and U13 tennis teams had a successful trip to Sunderland, winning the Aegon Team Tennis Schools Year 8 & 10 North Regional Finals.  Both teams are now through to the last four in the UK.  This is the first time the School has achieved this in two age groups in one year.

The teams were amongst the final 16 teams from around 625 teams that originally entered this event.  The first day of play saw 32 boys’ tennis teams from across Great Britain take to the courts. Described by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTW) as “the standout school from the day”, Merchiston pupils were dominant in the both the Year 8 & 10 North Region to secure a spot in the National Finals for both teams.

The winning teams now progress to the National Finals which will take place at Bolton Arena on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December 2013.  Joining Merchiston in the Year 8 Boys National Finals are The Lancaster School, Cheam High School and Bournemouth Collegiate School who  came through some tough matches in the their respective Regional Finals.  The Year 10 Boys National Finalists are Reed’s School, Repton School and Millfield School.

Merchiston’s Tennis Academy Head Coach, Marcel du Coudray, knows how challenging these matches will be and has full confidence in his players. He commented, “Reaching the National Finals with both age group teams is a superb achievement by the boys and shows the depth we have built up within the Tennis Academy.  The National Finals will be an excellent test as we are competing against the traditional giants of British schools tennis but we’ve proved in the past that we belong at this level and the boys are excited to be there.”
