Year 8 with Blue Tongued SkinkCobham Hall was invaded yesterday by an array of creepy-crawlies, lizards and tortoises as Years 7 & 8 had a Mini-Beasts workshop.

Run by Andrew Smith’s Mini-Beast Workshops, the interactive lessons discussed structural differences, looking at both vertebrates and invertebrates, and pupils were taught about animal adaptations to different environments.  Head of Science Mr Jonathan Fryer explained why he organised the workshops, “The key thing about the animals being present is that the lesson became real.  Seeing them in the flesh meant that the students also gained a greater respect for the animals – a very important aspect of their experience.

“There is a practical approach to Science teaching at Cobham Hall and the Mini-Beast talk is part of the ‘hands on’ experience students gain during their time here.  For some children, doing is the best way to learn.”

Amongst the animals being discussed were a corn snake, a blue-tongued skink, a water dragon and horse field tortoise.  The girls were able to handle some of the animals, with many incredulous that they could stroke a tarantula’s leg, or at how different a snake felt compared to their initial thoughts.  For some, it was a chance to overcome fears, with many taking the opportunity to hold or touch the animals.
