Monkton Combe Rowers Make History
Monkton’s Rowers 2015

Monkton Combe Rowing Club has a long and illustrious past with successful members such as Steve Williams and Rowley Douglas going on to win the highest accolade in the sport becoming Olympic Champions.

With history in mind Monkton’s Director of Rowing, Matt Wells, is proud to announce that this has been the most successful Lent Term that Monkton rowing has ever seen.  Monkton have won 18 events across all age groups,  genders  and disciplines (rowing and sculling).

In amongst the success there are three performance highlights that stand out:

J18 4x (year 12-13 boys quad) winning three races back to back.

J18 8+ (year 12-13 boys eight) winning the headship at Avon Head of the River (fastest boat of the event beating all senior and university crews).

J14 4x+ B (year 9 boys quad second boat) becoming national champions.

Commenting on this historic performance, Matt Wells, commented, “The difference for me watching the progression is the change in the students. They are becoming more competitive with themselves and collectively against other schools. It is this desire to constantly improve, to work even harder for greater rewards, that is most impressive, as this can’t be taught. It is an inbuilt life skill that shows off their strength of character and determination to develop, and ultinmately, to  succeed.”

Behind the successes as always in sport there is a dedicated team who enable the equipment and facilities to be kept at an extremely high standard.  They also ensure that the same consistent coaching of skills across all age groups.  This is what we have been able to do at Monkton. First and foremost our role enables new students the opportunity to learn the sport, to participate, make new friends and not necessarily compete, but to keep fit, stay healthy and enjoy the benefits of rowing at Monkton.”
