Monmouth footballer wins player of the year

A footballer from Monmouth School for Boys has been crowned Newport County U15s Player of the Year.

Midfielder Alex Grocott was presented with the award at the club’s development centre by Gavin Foxall, the club’s operational chairman.

A Newport County spokesman said: “Alex has developed and progressed into a very confident player, who is very skilful and has a fantastic attitude towards football.”

Mark Tamplin, master in charge of football at Monmouth, commented: “I am extremely proud of Alex for his commitment and dedication to Newport County’s development team. He has a tremendous passion for playing football and we are delighted his efforts have been recognised by the coaches at Newport County.”

Alex was also part of the Monmouth School for Boys’ U15 A team that went the season undefeated. He was spotted by Newport whilst playing for the school and was selected along with fellow pupils Seb Lawson and Sam Swingwood.

The trio have been a key part of the school team’s success, helping them climb to third in their age category on schoolssports.com.
