An aspiring doctor from Monmouth School for Boys has become an ambassador for a national mentoring scheme.

Charlie Walker was recently appointed as the school ambassador for the national ‘Medic Mentor’ scheme as part of its education directorate.

As part of this role Charlie will be helping other young people who plan to apply for health care-related degrees.

Charlie said: “In my new role as a school ambassador, I will be working with a team to discuss some of the hurdles that university applicants might face and we will be trying to work out how to overcome them. I am excited to be involved in Medic Mentor and excited to see what we can achieve as a group to help other young people.”

The Monmouth School for Boys’ pupil demonstrated his suitability for the role by winning last year’s Wales’ Schools surgical essay competition, run by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

He aspires to become a doctor like his father and hopes to study medicine at Oxford University or Imperial College London.

Emma Barson, head of biology at Monmouth School for Boys, said: “Charlie is interested in pursuing a career in medicine and is a worthy candidate for this exciting leadership role.  He will have an opportunity in the future to support younger students who are also considering careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science or psychology.”
