A Monmouth School for Boys’ student has won the the top prize at the WJEC Innovation Awards for his unique bike lock design.

Kyle Williams, 18, achieved top prize at the awards ceremony in Cardiff for his innovation that secures all integral parts of a bicycle.

He also won a Gold CREST award and has been entered into the Big Bang Fair at the NEC Birmingham in March for a chance to become the UK Young Engineer of the Year 2018.

Kyle said: “My invention is for use in the fields of cycling and security with the intention of it being stationed in cities as well as venues of popular sporting events.”

The upper sixth form student’s unique design is the subject of a patent application, which is a first for the school, according to Andy White, head of design and technology at Monmouth School for Boys.

Kyle acknowledged the assistance he had received: “Mr White and the design and technology department have been very supportive and encouraged me a lot with my application often outside of school hours.”

He is hoping to study Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London or at the University of Bath.
