Moreton Hall Eco Team National FinalsMoreton Hall Eco Team entered a team of Year 9 girls in the Go4Set competition run by the Engineering Development Trust this term. The judges were impressed with their model, awarding them the ‘2015 Prize for Real World Application’ by the British Science Association and Crest Awards. The project also won a place in the finals of the National Science and Engineering Competition 2015 – 2016 that will be held next year at the Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair 2016.

The 6 girls:  Hermione Byron Low, Eliza Kiel, Harriet Mansell, Natalia Jones, Hannah Paxton and Emily King chose to design an “Eco Classroom”. The finished design which includes a hexagonal classroom made from straw bales with a living roof and ground source heating was taken to the finals of the competition this week and presented alongside 70 other schools.

“I really enjoyed working on this project” said Hannah Paxton “it has taught me all about working in a team and the importance of designing a building that works for lots of different uses.”

“The team of girls have been fantastic” said Hannah Peel, Head of Biology and Ecology “from extracting pigments with Dr Kelly to colour their lime plaster, to designing the roof and flooring, they have really addressed the competition brief. It is so good that we would like to think about really building an Eco  Classroom one day at Moreton using their design.”
