‘A book is a device to ignite the imagination’ writes Alan Bennett. Moreton Hall is helping to encourage the pupils of the school to ignite their imaginations via books in their new Reading Mountain Challenge.

“The Reading Mountain Challenge’ is an incentive to put aside smartphones and tablets and pick up a book instead,” explains Andrew Macdonald-Brown, Head of English. “Simply we want to get children who don’t read to read, and children who do read to read more. And not just children, but teachers and parents too. The shared experience of the mountain means that people are talking about books as well as reading them, celebrating and recommending and lending the books they love.”

The challenge consists of the pupils choosing one of the three great peaks of the UK to ‘climb’.  Choosing Scafell Pike requires the children to tackle seven reading tasks; Snowden equates to fourteen reading tasks; and Ben Nevis twenty.

The tasks range from reading a Puffin Classic to reading a novel translated into English. From reading a book of poetry to reading a book recommended by a friend and even reading a newspaper.

Students have until June to complete their personal mountain climb and prizes will then be awarded for all successful ‘mountain-conquerors’.  By then their imaginations should be well and truly ignited!
