League tables published today by the Department forMoreton Hall GCSE EBaccEducation reveal that Moreton Hall’s GCSE
candidates were Shropshire’s top performers in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) in 2012, ranking the non-selective independent school above all of its highly selective counterparts such as Shrewsbury School, Shrewsbury High School and Concorde College.

So what is the EBacc?

The EBacc measures how many pupils achieve a grade A*-C GCSE in English, maths, two sciences, a language and history or geography, which many educationalists class as a move towards a more "rounded education".

Education Secretary Michael Gove said: "Subjects such as physics, chemistry, history, geography, French and German give students the opportunity to succeed in every field.

The numbers studying a proper range of rigorous subjects has been in decline. Now, thanks to our English Bacc, that has changed. More young people are now following the courses which the best colleges and top employers value."

Principal of Moreton Hall, Jonathan Forster comments: “Being the top school in the county with 73% of our pupils achieving EBacc is very satisfying. Moreton Hall is supportive of the move towards ensuring all students perform well in the EBacc subjects. We work very closely with universities and employers to make sure that we are equipping our pupils with the right skill set for highly successful careers and EBacc is an important part of this.”
