A pupil at York’s Mount School has received an unconditional offer to a prestigious Ivy League university, the second in consecutive years for the all-girls’ senior school.
Natalie Tan, who is an international boarder from Singapore and joined The Mount for Sixth Form, thanked her family, saying, “I wrote in my application about my family and how they effected my work ethic. I had a lot of support from my personal tutor, Helen Snelson, and Head of College, Wendy Thompson. The Mount’s support for applying to US universities was very good, even though we don’t have a lot of students applying to US universities.”
Natalie, who has also received conditional offers from three UK universities, applied to Cornell through the universal common application (UCA). She said, “It’s a bit of extra studying, and you do need to commit extra time, but it really is worth doing. When I received my letter of offer – it was a nice personal touch to have a ‘snail mail’ letter – I was shocked at first, and then really, really happy. I ran to tell Mrs Thompson in the Dining Room and we both cried; I’d never happy-cried in my life before.”
Natalie’s offer comes a year after The Mount’s previous Head Girl, Caroline Rosenzweig, received her unconditional offer from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she is now studying Engineering.

The Mount is an extraordinary school and the Sixth Form is the jewel in our crown. We celebrate the achievements of each of our girls, and take pride in helping them reach the point where they accept their offer of place at their university of choice. In the past five years, Mount girls have gone on to study at a remarkably wide range of universities, including the Ivy League, Oxbridge, Central St Martin’s, the Northern Ballet Academy, Norland College as well as universities in Canada, Europe and the Far East.”
