A group of eight pupils from The Mount School created a lighting design which will feature in this week’s Illuminating York.
The Year 10 pupils’ design will be projected onto St Michael le Belfry Church.
Matt Cannon, Head of Physics at the all-girl Quaker School, entered The Mount into a competition run by the Society of Light and Lighting and Creative Learning Partnerships. He said, “Illuminating York presented something different from the curriculum for the girls at The Mount.
“As a school we aim to provide outstanding opportunities from Junior through to College. This project especially resonated with us as we have the goal of developing our well established STEM program into encompassing the arts as well, turning STEM into STEAM, as it were.
“This project fit the bill perfectly! It allowed the girls to access a full range light techniques, which they had never experienced before, and to develop their knowledge of light further than any curriculum demands. This was elegantly tied into the arts by giving the girls an opportunity to let their artistic minds run wild by showing Saint Micheal Le Belfrey in a new light.
“The workshop was excellently delivered by experts in the field and the girls were fully immersed into this new world of science and arts!”
The group had been challenged to create a design that presents “York in a new light”.
Consultants from the Society of Light and and Lighting who briefed the pupils, praised their enthusiasm and ideas. The organisation has worked with three other schools. The pupils (pictured) will be listed on a plaque at the installation during the festival.
Mount pupils’ designs also featured in Illuminating York in 2012 when an Open Art Competition challenged young artists to come up with their own mythical creatures. The designs of four Mount pupils were chosen by artist Jim Moir (also known as Vic Reeves) to be projected onto the Hospitium in the Museum Gardens.
Illuminating York takes place in York from 26-29 October.
