IMG_4033Students from the University of York brought Chinese New Year to The Mount Junior School on Wednesday 10 February.

Dr Sabrina Chai, University of York’s Director of International Partnership Programme, and several students held a variety of cultural workshops for students at The Mount Junior School.

Workshops included Chinese calligraphy, the art of tea-making, creating ‘lai see’ red packets for lucky money and the challenge of paper cutting to create attractive flower and snowflake shapes.

Rachel Capper, Head of The Mount Junior School, said “The children enjoy learning about different cultures and Chinese New Year provides a wonderfully festive occasion to learn more about China. We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr Chai and her students from the University of York come here for these workshops. The children have been looking forward to this.”

Chinese communities are currently celebrating the beginning of the Year of the ‘Fire Monkey’ in the traditional Chinese calendar.
