The Mount School won the York Area round of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition last Friday (8 March), mount school yorkqualifying for the second year in a row for the East of England finals this Saturday (16 March) in Kettering.

Speaking on the theme of Squatting Legislation, the team won accolades with Lily Howells awarded the Best Vote of Thanks and Alice Grierson awarded the Best Chairperson, and The Mount winning the competition overall.

The win galvanises Quaker all-girls’ school’s reputation for encouraging outstanding public speaking skills among its students. On 1-3 March of this year, twenty-four students from The Mount attended the XXIII Bath International Schools' Model United Nations Conference, where Holly Gardiner (who is also on The Mount’s Rotary Youth Speaks winning team) was recognised as a Commended Delegate and was one of the few to succeed in having her Resolution debated and passed.

Alice Grierson was recognised at the MUN as a Highly Commended Delegate. Director of Studies and Head of College Jo Hayward said "The Mount's curriculum instils our girls with critical consciousness and the ability to think in a global context.

Last year The Mount became the first school in England to introduce the work of the PeaceJam Foundation into the school syllabus, through our Sixth Form College. We are now drawing this down and introducing it throughout the school, in the lower years. The girls’ own investigations into homelessness in York inspired their topic in the Rotary competition.

Last year The Mount also won the Yorkshire Courtroom Advocacy Competition and this year – in addition to their outstanding performance in the recent Model United Nations Conference – has qualified for the regional finals of the hotly contested Debating Matters competition on 18 March at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.”
So what is the secret to developing such strong public speaking skills?

"Being in an all-girls school, our students enjoy a level of confidence and an ability to explore and express their personalities which is unfeasible in a coeducational environment. That confidence comes out in the girls' talents at public speaking," says Hayward.

"Parents who hope their daughters might come to The Mount really need to get in touch with our Registrar as soon as possible. Boarding places for Sixth Form are already full and a waiting list is beginning for day students. The only way to ensure your daughters can come to The Mount in our College years is for them to join the School earlier on."
