Isobel makes a point with top GCSE grades

Yorkshire youth fencing star Isobel Mulkern is pointing to success after recording top marks in this year’s GCSE exams.

The 16-year-old, a pupil at Mount St Mary’s College, in Spinkhill, achieved six A*s and four As.

Isobel, from Totley, Sheffield, is tipped to be the College’s first female fencing captain and earlier this year reached the knockout stages of the British Youth Championships after winning a bronze medal at the regional qualifier event.

A boarding pupil at Mount St Mary’s, Isobel will now go on to study English, History, Latin and French at A Level.

Isobel, who is also a talented writer and has aspirations to become a journalist, said: “I am so happy with my GCSE grades and I am just really pleased that all the hard work and studying has paid off.

“It has been a really great year for me, not only in terms of my academic achievements, but things have been going really well on the fencing team. We have got a really strong team now and it was brilliant to qualify for the British Championships and compete in my home city at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.”

Mount St Mary’s has a long tradition of fencing with many former school fencers going on to captain at university. Under the guidance of a leading professional coach, the College has enjoyed many successes at inter-school, regional and national level.

Isobel added: “I am planning to stay on at the Mount studying English, History, Latin and French at A Level and would love to one day fulfill my ambition to become a journalist while continuing with my fencing.”

Some of the College’s other top performers include George Daly, from Rotherham, who is set to join the growing number of pupils studying Science and Maths at A Level after recording
five A*s, four As and a B. He will now study Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and History at the Spinkhill school.

Alex Chatten, from Owlthorpe, Sheffield, will continue on to Mount St Mary’s sixth form to study Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Politics after achieving six A*s and three As.

Kishan Adoni, from Rotherham, also gained excellent results with eight A*s and two As. He is continuing at the Mount to study Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. This follows his brother Pavan, who achieved straight As in his A-levels last week in the same subjects Kishan will be taking.

Victoria Lloyd, from Holymoorside, Chesterfield recorded six A*s and three As and will now take Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths, while Holly Band, from Matlock achieved two A*s, five As and a B, and will study Chemistry, Biology, Philosophy and French.

Laurence McKell, Headmaster at Mount St Mary’s, said: “We are incredibly proud of all our pupils who have worked so hard to achieve what is, yet again, another fantastic set of GCSE results.

“Although we are a non-selective school, the high standards of academic success we achieve year on year is a testament to our outstanding staff and dedicated pupils.”

Mount St Mary’s achieved an overall 73 per cent pass rate for A* to C grades with A*s and As up from 27 to 33 per cent. The results follow the College’s record-breaking A Levels announced last week.

Laurence added: “Our ethos is about providing opportunities for a quality, seamless education, encouraging creativity, diversity and individuality so that our pupils leave school with the confidence, maturity and skills to face whatever challenges may lie ahead.”
