National Science and Engineering week at Hethersett Old Hall SchoolNational Science and Engineering Week went with a ‘Big Bang’ at Hethersett Old Hall School. The week was filled with activities, including trips to the Science Museum in London, a visit to Cley marshes and a Meccano exhibition held at the School.

Pupils were involved in an interactive drawing competition in a joint venture with the art department; postcards were distributed to each child with two connection points, and they were required to draw their idea of a network. The postcards included networks of string, cotton and wood as well as sketches of internal organs. Each postcard was then displayed in a large network covering a wall.

Other activities included a Meccano exhibition displaying a steam locomotive, track cyclist and a cyclograph that had evolved over 20 years. An internet search set at three levels was available for pupils to learn more about the galaxy that we live in, whilst enhancing their IT skills. (A copy of each level is available to download from the School's website.)

All the activities were thoroughly enjoyed by pupils of all ages. Mr Crump, Headmaster, commented: ‘The range of careers available through studying the sciences is endless. By taking part in National Engineering and Science week we hope to encourage some of our students to continue the subject into higher education and help fulfil our nation’s requirements for more scientists.’
