Two Felsted Prep School teams have won national recognition at the Big Bang Science and Engineering Fair in Birmingham.
Year 7 girls Freya Perry, Grace Boroughs, Ava Readman and Anna White won the National Talent 2030 Engineering prize for their project the ‘Sanitary Shark’, an invention to remove waste product from the sea; helping to clean up the oceans of pollutants whilst preserving marine life.
Judges were particularly impressed with their additional research into hidden plastics in sanitary products and their positive promotion of plastic-free alternatives which had gained them support from eco-hygiene company Grace and Green.
Meanwhile, Year 8 pupils Shesh Abu-Jabir and Hamish Baumber were awarded the Big Bang National Runner-Up prize for their project ‘The Pro-Hand Way’. This focussed on a 3D-printed prosthetic hand which the boys have spent months testing and developing into a fully functioning, and cheap to develop, prosthetic with a low carbon footprint.
Shesh commented: “We will continue to work on making the hand more intelligent and hopefully achieve our future ambition of using the design to supply refugee camps in war-torn countries.”
Mrs Christina Bury, director of learning and teacher of science at Felsted Prep, added:
“These pupils have really challenged themselves through these thought provoking, real world STEM projects. Their passion, energy and enthusiasm to make a difference is inspiring.”
Felsted is committed to engaging pupils with STEM subjects and the Prep School currently hold a Gold Quality Mark for Science. Felsted pupils have reached the Big Bang National Finals for seven years, winning many national awards for their entries.
