Samantha Martindale and the Year 6 children were very pleased and excited to be invited to Hampton Court again this year to take part in the annual competition, with this year’s theme “World Costume” inspiring Mrs Martindale and the Year 6 children to create Kikuya (the first Japanese geisha).

Kikuya took over three weeks to complete and is made of bamboo, straw and cotton bandages. Her hair is made of black bin bags over chicken wire, which held a variety of live plants, one of the requirements of the competition. Kikuya’s kimono was designed and painted by the children. Her eyes are purple/black buttons, because purple is considered to be the most beautiful colour in Japanese culture.

The Royal Horticultural Society received over 2,700 votes from visitors to the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, resulting in Kikuya being voted as the 3rd most popular scarecrow.

The RHS said: “The Scarecrows were an absolute hit with all our visitors so we thank all the schools involved for putting on such a terrific display.”
