Red Nose Day 2013 was buzzing with excitement at Northbourne Park School as children arrived dressed in their Northbourne Park Red Nose Dayred noses and a vibrant array of red clothes, many clutching their entries for the ‘Great Northbourne Bake Off’.

The competition invited pupils to get baking at home and come up with creations inspired by Red Nose Day to be judged and then sold in a cake sale at the end of the day.

The cakes, cookies and other creations were impressive in their number and variety, with children demonstrating their creativity and imagination in their beautiful designs.

Red noses featured on crispy cakes, cookies, tarts, cupcakes and Swiss rolls. Children at both the Pre-Prep and Prep schools took part, and raised a total of £661.59 from the cake sale and non-uniform day.

Other activities on the day included a ‘guess who?’ quiz, featuring photos of teachers from 1988 – the year of the first Red Nose Day. Pupils also took their own initiative to fundraise by designing and selling their own comics.

Despite an exciting day, pupils also remembered why they were raising money for Comic Relief. The assembly featured a film clip of a boy called Robert living in a slum in Kenya, highlighting the poverty afflicting children and families in many countries, particularly in Africa.

One Year 4 pupil, did a one–off Red Nose Day swap with the Headmaster for assembly, and confidently spoke to the pupils about Comic Relief (in the style of Mr Balfour!)

The real Mr Balfour, Headmaster said “I am proud of the empathy that our children have shown and of their culinary creativity. This is a fine total for a worthy cause’.
