Northbourne Park School with their record breaking portraits Pupils from Northbourne Park School have helped to achieve a Guinness World Records title for the ‘Most artists working on the same art installation’ by participating in Face Britain.

The Northbourne Park School pupils are amongst 201,948 youngsters across Britain who took part in the UK’s largest art project, and officially acknowledged as Guinness World Records record-breakers. They achieved this record by creating self-portraits and uploading them onto the Face Britain online gallery. At the end of the year the entire collection of portraits will be handed over to The British Library, providing a lasting legacy and a vibrant snapshot of the 2012 generation.

The portraits were combined to form an image of HM The Queen projected onto Buckingham Palace for three nights in April, to coincide with Her Majesty’s Birthday. The children’s individual portraits will continue to be shown across 200 digital advertising screens in train stations and shopping centres until the end of 2012.

Headmaster, Edward Balfour, said

“It’s been wonderful to be involved in the UK’s largest ever art project and great to know that the portraits will become part of history. It’s so exciting to learn that our pupils have contributed.

We uploaded 130 self-portraits of our pupils from 3 to 13 yrs in a variety of media including paint, pastels and clay, evidence of our creative education in action.”

Face Britain was open to anyone aged 4-16 years in the UK. The project encouraged participants to explore their creativity, and to consider their own identity and place in history during the lead up to Jubilee and Olympic celebrations.

This national self-portraiture project was developed by The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts an educational charity, founded by HRH The Prince of Wales, to enable disadvantaged young people to access and engage with professional arts.
