On Saturday 6th September, Northbourne Park School opened the new academic year with its unique inter-house Olympiad and Burton Race.

For the first time, the school decided to hold both competitions on the same day and with so much at stake, there was a real buzz of excitement and expectation in the air. The competitions aim to help to integrate all of its boys and girls; British, Chinese, Nigerian, French and Spanish children by holding a variety of inter-house competitions.

Pupils represent one of four school houses, Drake, Marlborough, Nelson or Wellington. Nine extra-curricular competitions took place in the morning, including Welly Throwing, a Maths Quiz, Science Logic, Outdoor Education, Poetry writing, Hit Ball, a Language Challenge, a Treasure Hunt and Netball Shooting.

This was the 6th Olympiad and is the first Inter-House trophy up for grabs in the school calendar. It was followed by the Burton Race in which children individually sprint and swim their way around a massive relay course. It is very much part of the Northbourne tradition and has been held annually for over 40 years.

Here’s what some of our competitors had to say about the day:

Freddie Hendy (year 5 pupil)… “Covered with awesomeness”

Leo Bevan (year 5 pupil) … “It was so fun. I love competitions”

Ria (year 3 pupil)… “It was really good. I enjoyed the Burton Race and loved hit ball”

Sophia (year 6 pupil)  “ I really enjoyed the day. All of the activities were really fun and I loved the treasure hunt and the caterpillar races”.

The winning house The Olympiad 2014 was Marlborough. Nelson won the Burton Race. Well done to all competitors!
