Beechwood Sacred Heart DramaThis term senior pupils from Beechwood Sacred Heart School, Tunbridge Wells presented the comedy “Battle Royal” by Nick Stafford-Clark. This witty play charts a fascinating chapter in the history of the British monarchy – full of scandals, press intrusion, illicit affairs, overspending and political meddling. It centres around George, the Prince Regent in 1795, who is put under pressure to marry, and thus relieve himself of his many debts, and produce an heir. The tempestuous marriage between George and Caroline, his outspoken wife, has often been paralleled with that of Charles and Diana!
Once again a large cast was encouraged to display their acting talents to the full. So keen were the pupils to be involved that two casts performed on alternate nights! The historical drama was a demanding piece, but they mastered the dialogue and conveyed the political intrigue, engaging the audience with both the humour and pathos of the piece.
