Okehampton based Olympic athlete Georgina Geikie visited Shebbear College to take part in their Sports Day on Shebbear CollegeFriday 24th May.

She was involved in shooting competitions throughout the day, offering the pupils professional coaching on pistol and air rifle shooting before they took part in their competitions.

Georgina was the first GB female athlete to qualify for the Olympics Pistol Shooting event and is working with Shooting4England, an organisation that aims to develop and promote air gun shooting nationally as a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Georgina was assisted on the day by the Shebbear Shooters, an air gun sporting club based in Shebbear.

The club covers many disciplines and has the use of a four acre field adjacent to the college where they concentrate on outdoor airgun sport. The club uses lightweight sport rifles for indoor competitions in the village hall.

Although a bitterly cold, windy day, all the pupils who took part during Sports Day competed with determination and everyone had a very enjoyable day.

The hot drinks, a Fairtrade cake stall and a barbeque were particularly welcomed.

Following the day’s sporting events Georgina presented medals, certificates and trophies to delighted pupils during a prize-giving ceremony in the new assembly hall.
