Oswestry School’s 1st XI football team have been going from strength to strength over the past two years and are now ranked 8th in the UK in the list of Independent School Football Teams.

The team are competing in two major competitions this year. In the English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) Under 18 Schools’ Trophy, the boys were drawn against Shrewsbury School’s 1st XI. Playing at home, Shrewsbury were staunch favourites, but after close starting goals Oswestry School pulled away from the opposition and finished the match with a final score of 5-2.

A few days later, the team reached the unchartered territory of the Boodles Cup 1/4 final with a 4 – 0 victory over Highgate School. A fast start to the games saw them take their visitors to the English/Welsh border by surprise and within 30 minutes Oswestry were four goals to the good. Goals from Tai Jones (2), Chun Wong and Lloyd Evans were well celebrated by the fans in attendance. They now await the draw on the Independent Schools Football Association website later in the week to see who their next opponents will be.
