Over the Easter holidays, sixteen Oundle cricketers, aged 15-18, will be touring Sri Lanka, where in addition to playing six matches against various school sides, they will also be visiting Foundation of Goodness, a charity whose mission is to empower the less privileged communities, bridging the gap between rural and urban opportunity in Sri Lanka.
In advance of the trip, to raise money for Foundation of Goodness, the cricketers undertook a series of challenges running for a twelve hour non-stop period throughout the night of 11th March. Throughout the night the boys took it in turns to face the School’s new Merlyn spin bowling machine as well as completing some tough team challenges in the gym which included:
- Rowing across the channel – 32km
- A cycle from Colombo to Galle – 120km
- A run from Dambulla to Sirigiya and back – 30km
- Cross-training across the Lake District – 50km
Master in Charge of Cricket, John Crawley commented, “The Foundation of Goodness is a wonderful charity which helps rural children by providing educational opportunities when none may have otherwise existed. Their focus is largely based upon creating an environment which engenders learning opportunities for disadvantaged rural children and youth. Trustees of the charity include Kumar Sangakara, Mahela Jayawardena and Mutiah Muralidaran. This charity forms a perfect fit with Oundle School’s aims of helping educational charities around the world and I am very proud that the team have taken it upon themselves to raise these funds.”
The event has so far raised over £5000 (with an additional £3000 donated from a recent House dinner). The total raised will enable the charity to provide the extra lessons needed in English and other subjects for seventy-five children for a full year.”
