On 15 November, two teams of keen readers from Oundle School performed well at the Central England heat of the Kid Lit Quiz at Comberton Village College near Cambridge with a team of Second formers (Year 8) finishing in 2nd place overall.

The competition is structured like a traditional quiz, where pupils work in teams to answer one hundred questions in ten categories. The categories reflect all interests, and include picture books, comics, film stories, popular modern authors, myths, fairy tales and the classics.

Head Librarian, Leigh Giurlando commented, “The two Oundle teams started strongly, and performed very well overall. Facing stiff competition from a total of twenty-eight teams, Oundle’s Second Form team comprising of Isabella Henderson (12), Noa Anderson (12), Rachel Johnston (12) and Sophie Hawkes (12) overcame a slight slump with a question round that drew upon their knowledge of Shakespeare, and finished runners-up with 77 points. The 1st place winners from Aylesbury Grammar School achieved an impressive 92 points.”

The Kid Lit Quiz is an international competition involving schools across the UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, South Africa, USA, Singapore and Hong Kong. Heats are held in regional locations, followed by a National Final for regional winners. In 2017 the World Final will be held in New Zealand.

Leigh concluded, “The Kid Lit Quiz is rightly called ‘The Sport of Reading’. The pupils take the competition very seriously, but also have a lot of fun. They love being able to exercise their knowledge about books, and share their enthusiasm in such a supportive environment.”
