On 4th June, Oundle School welcomed fifty-six pupils from seven local primary schools (Oundle and Kings Cliffe Middle School, Gladstone Primary School, Castor CE Primary School, Brigstock Lathams CE School, Exeter Primary School, Woodnewton Primary School and Studfall Junior School), to its SciTec science facilities to take part in a Gifted and Talented science event.
This annual event aims to highlight the importance of practical science by delivering hands on experiments across all three sciences to visiting children. Experiments included playing with maggots (Biology), investigating fruit batteries (Physics) and making Coca Cola (Chemistry), enabling the young pupils to get a taste of higher level practical science whilst at the same time retaining the fun element which is so important in maintaining an interest.
Emma Wilkinson from Woodnewton Primary School said, “The children had a brilliant day and thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities.”
Angie Alloway from Studfall Junior School said, “The children were simply buzzing, what a wonderful day.”
Mark Ratchford, Headmaster of Castor CE Primary School said, “Our pupils all came back to school very enthused! My gratitude to the science team at Oundle for making them feel welcome and inspiring them to look forward to secondary science.”
Head of Science at Oundle School, Oli Peck, commented, “If we are serious about producing the scientists of tomorrow, it is important to start investing in our young people today. Getting primary school pupils enthusiastic about science through practical work is an excellent way to develop their love not only of science, but also of learning.”
