Fifteen Sixth Form pupils from Oswestry School joined Dr Andrew Ellis and Mr Julian Noad for a trip to Oxford University.

The pupils had a long, but worthwhile day which included a personalised tour of the Mathematics Institute and its fabulous Andrew Wiles building, followed by a lecture from Professor Ian Griffiths on ‘industrial mathematics’ (applying mathematics to industrial challenges) and then small group tutorials on topics such as modelling population growth and recurrence relations with several doctoral students.

Lunch in the ‘Pi’ cafe led on to a tour of University College and an explanation of how the college system works. A bit of free time and a ‘selfie challenge’ afforded the opportunity to explore the city centre more widely before sourdough pizzas filled bellies for the way home.

Each of the pupils were thoroughly inspired by the trip to the prestigious University and Oswestry School hopes to see many of these pupils applying for top universities, both in the UK and overseas. One Year 13 pupil, Ivan, is currently awaiting the outcome of his Oxford mathematics application. His excitement has grown and the School’s fingers are crossed.
