Few pieces of Sedbergh trivia

rugby ballEarlier today I spent some time with Katy de la Riviere, the School’s archivist, and what a treasure trove of information she is! Here are a few things you probably didn’t know about Sedbergh:

1.       In 1993, a Sedbergh School rugby ball went in to space with the NASA shuttle ‘Discovery’ and orbited the earth. Whilst in space, the crew chatted to pupils who had chosen some pre-prepared questions to ask the astronauts. The crew all signed the ball before it was brought to our archives.

2.       A Sedberghian was travelling home on the train and found himself sitting in a carriage with all The Beatles. The only paper he had on him was his Brown Book* so he asked them all to sign it. Apparently it is very unusual because John, Paul, George and Ringo all signed the same page (a seasoned autograph hunter would have asked them each to sign a separate page). Beatles Brown Book_1

*The Brown Book is the Sedberghian ‘bible’ for pupils, produced each year and listing rules, staff, pupils, the calendar of events and a whole lot more.

3.       One of poet William Wordsworth’s sons was expelled for shooting the hands off the St Andrews church clock from his bedroom window in Evans House. There is no photo as this event would have taken place around 1823 but, ironically, he went on to be a vicar so clearly there were not too many long-lasting implications for this misdemeanour.
