Spectacular Street Theatre

Seven Lower Sixth girls took part in the MAD about Waddesdon Festival during the last weekend in June. The group of girls were showcasing their first ever street theatre piece, a high energy, colourful and comic routine that impressed the event organisers so much that they were invited to perform on stage and be interviewed.

The girls’ piece, devised by Pipers’ Dramatist in Residence, Miss Walters, told the story of a Lacrosse team called “Checkers”. The team are looking for another team to play against, but end up playing against themselves and scoring an own goal! Including musical parodies of “I'd do anything” and Spandau Ballet’s “Gold” (changed to Goal!), it was a challenging experience for the girls as street theatre performances generally have to be highly visible, loud and simple to follow in order to attract a crowd.

MAD About Waddesdon is Buckinghamshire's annual celebration of Music, Arts, Dance and Drama. Now in its sixth year, the festival provides an opportunity to experience the talent, energy and creativity at the heart of the community. The two day festival includes an array of music, dance, drama, poetry, storytelling, film, and photography performed and presented throughout the Gardens at Waddesdon Manor.

“It was an exciting new experience. It really got me interested in the different types of theatre you can do.” Alice K

“Street Theatre was really really fun! It was a motivating experience that I will never forget!” Annie H

“Street Theatre was really challenging. It was hard to work with the crowd’s reaction at first, but the whole experience was really rewarding.” Brooklyn T

Dramatist in Residence, Miss Walters said, “The girls really rose to the challenge of street theatre and were great ambassadors for Pipers. I am extremely proud of each and every one of them.”
