Senior Debaters from Pipers Corner rose to the challenge in November as they took part in the first round of the English Speaking Union (ESU) Schools Mace. Facing stiff competition from John Hampden Grammar School, Chesham Grammar School and Berkhamsted School, the judges ruled in favour of the performance of the Pipers girls and we are delighted that they will now progress to round two of the competition.

The first debate of the evening saw the team for John Hampden pitted against Chesham Grammar as they debated the motion "This House would make parents liable for serious crimes committed by their children".

It was then the turn of the Pipers girls as they took on a team from Berkhamsted School debating the motion "This House would make post-mortem organ donation compulsory without exception". The girls, who were proposing the motion put together a strong argument and did very well to cope with a highly skilled opposing team, who consistently raised points of information and kept the girls on their toes. That the girls were not distracted from their argument is a great testament to their skills and a major contributing factor as to why they were put through to round two.

The Schools Mace is the oldest national debating competition in the UK. It has been running since 1957, encouraging the discussion of controversial topics and current affairs. Students who participate in the competition develop their knowledge of controversial issues and world affairs, while enhancing their speech writing, public speaking and analytical thinking skills. The competition also helps develop confidence in its participants. Former winners of this competition have gone on to become MPs, well-known journalists, senior lawyers, prominent scientists and captains of industry.

Head of English, Mr Gifford said, "It is so exciting to see Pipers girls win through (against tough grammar school opposition) to the next round for the first time. Judging from the attendance at the debate, many girls now are rising to the challenge and enjoying it. A mini-bus of supporters is already being arranged for round two! Especial congratulations go to our team – Rachel and Brooklyn."
