Pipers Corner School students performing A Midsummer Nights DreamMagic, mis-direction and mistaken identity were the order of the day when senior girls staged a magical performance of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

The Landau Hall was transformed into an enchanted woodland glade and in combination with the impressive costumes, make-up and lighting it was a truly mesmerising spectacle.

In preparation for the production the 33-strong cast spent time exploring Shakespeare's characters in some depth and developed a real love of the language used in the play. The action took place "in the round" which required the girls to maintain an awareness of their audience as the scenes played out and meant that the audience themselves felt totally involved in the action.

The costumes and props were modernised to allow the girls to see how relevant "A Midsummer Night's Dream" still is, but the language of blank verse and prose firmly remained.

From the moment the fairies arrived and began to watch the audience prior to the action starting, the creativity was spellbinding. With two Pucks, a court official called Frank, Snug on a scooter, suitcases belonging to the Lovers being raided by the fairies, Mechanicals getting ready for their play of "Pyramus and Thisbe" to the music of "There's no business like show business", Superman in the guise of Bottom the weaver and evocative music played live by our violinist, it was a performance like no other!

Director and Head of Performing Arts At Pipers Corner, Miss Heather Andrew said, "I could not be more proud of the cast and the people who worked so hard behind the scenes. There was an impeccable delivery of lines, costumes, lighting and make-up that could rival the most professional production and a standard of acting that was superb. It was a production which I know the girls will always remember for the joy of performing Shakespeare.
