Plymouth College sixth formers have made it through to the national final of BASE – a business, accounting and skills Plymouth Collegeeducation competition.

Harry Cobbold, Katie Davies-Gregory, Oliver Foster, Nada Khalil, Phoebe Hirst and Megan Jones qualified for the national event after beating 15 other schools in the regional final.

Held in Exeter, the team had to advise a business client on how to solve a particular problem and develop a strategy to enable the business to move forwards. This was done via a presentation and by questioning from the judges.

In the national final, Plymouth College will compete against 26 teams from around the UK for the title BASE Champions 2013. Taking place in Birmingham in June, the competition will be followed by a presentation dinner and awards ceremony.

“We were really looking forward to this year’s BASE competition because we came so close to making the national final last year,” said Harry Cobbold. “We work well together and as this is the last business competition for most of the team we were determined to get to the final stage.

“We gain so much from taking part in competitions like this. They give us lots of practical experience and really help to improve our employability skills.”

Plymouth College has a strong track record in business competitions – the school has won 11 national titles in recent years including Young Enterprise, Student Investor and Make Your Mark. Business and Economics pupils have also achieved the top mark in the country at GCSE, A level and DipFS on a number of occasions.
