Plymouth College’s senior basketball team are through to the quarter-finals of the Dynamik National Schools Plymouth College Basket ball teamCompetition after a nail-biting win over Churston Ferrers in the South West final.

The fast-paced match was hotly contested with strong play on both sides but went in Plymouth’s favour with a final score of 59-58 when Churston Ferrers missed two of three penalties just before the whistle.

Part of the Plymouth College Basketball Academy, this is the first time the team, who won the U19 Plymouth Schools’ League, have competed on a national level. Launched in 2012, the Academy works directly with professional city club Plymouth Raiders and is headed by Raiders’ Jay Marriott.

The Academy gives the young players access to high-level coaching and a top strength and conditioning programme, alongside first-rate academic opportunities.

The combined programme allows them to flourish on the basketball court and in the classroom without one compromising the other.

The programme also offers extensive mentoring and a variety of pathways to future sporting careers. As well as a number of talented local players, the Academy has recruited several European internationals this year.

The quarter-final match will take place on Wednesday 1 May against St Aloysius’ College in Islington.
