A Year 11 pentathlete from Plymouth College has been selected to represent Great Britain at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires next month.

Annabel Denton will be the female representative in the Great Britain section after coming out on top of the rigorous qualification system.

The Youth Olympic Games are the world’s largest multi-sport competition for young high-performance athletes, inspiring them to adopt the Olympic values of respect, friendship and excellence. The event brings together 4,000 of the world’s best young athletes between 15 and 18 years old from 206 nations, and is held every four years in its two editions, winter and summer.

Annabel said: “It is such a huge honour to represent Great Britain and I am so excited to have this amazing opportunity. I’m really looking forward to being part of the GB team and experiencing the atmosphere in Buenos Aires.”

Rob Flack, director of modern pentathlon and fencing at Plymouth College, said: “Annabel had a fantastic season and qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games is a well-earned opportunity to compete against the best youth pentathletes in the world and to experience the Olympic atmosphere, both in competition and in the athlete village. Her focus and determination to achieve so much in the sporting arena, whilst also performing highly in the classroom, are an inspiration to her team-mates. Training has gone well over the summer and I’m really excited to see her performance in Buenos Aires.”

The school’s International Honours Board now boasts more than 150 international representations since the year 2000.
