Plymouth College has won two awards at the prestigious Telegraph/Aviva School Sports Matters Awards 2012.Plymouth College school of the year

With more than 500 entries nation-wide and ten trophies up-for-grabs, the school won Independent School of the Year while Tom Daley won Male Pupil of the Year. Ruta Meilutyte was Commended in Female Pupil of the Year.

Plymouth College was shortlisted for a phenomenal year in sport. Home to Olympic gold medallist Ruta Meilutyte and Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley, the school also saw two other pupils compete.

London 2012 was a defining year for the school's elite swimming programme that also claimed a European Junior Swimming Champion and British Champions across the age goups.

The school's Modern Pentathlon and Fencing Academy is also going from strength to strength with British Champions in triathlon, tetrathlon, pentathlon and fencing this year.

A Basketball Academy and a Diving Academy are the latest additions to the sports' community.

Traditional sports like rugby and hockey continue to be strong with pupils regularly selected to county, regional and sometimes national teams. A number of pupils have received international selections for various sports and have broken a range of records.

Upper Sixth pupil Tom Daley, 18, won Male Pupil of the Year not only for winning an Olympic bronze medal, but because he also picked up the World Series, European and British titles this year.

Alongside his heavy training schedule and competition commitments he continued to work hard in his studies and walked away with an A and an A* in his A levels this summer.

Commended in Female Pupil of the Year, Olympic Champion, Ruta Meilutyte, 15, took the world by storm when she beat a world-class field to take gold in the 100m breaststroke in London 2012.

The Year 10 pupil broke the European record in the semi-final and received a hero's welcome in her home country, Lithuania.

The Awards were held at Lord's Cricket Ground in London and were hosted by former Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell and England Rugby World Cup winner, Will Greenwood. Presenters included sporting stars from the Olympic and Paralympic Games such as Jessica Ennis, Christine Ohuruogu, Richard Whitehead and Sarah Storey.

"It was a real honour to be presented with a Telegraph School Sports Award", said Plymouth College Headmaster, Dr Simon Wormleighton. "The event really reflected the breadth of sport on offer in schools from grass roots' clubs to elite athletes and it was fantastic to be part of it.

"This has been an incredible year for Plymouth College. We offer a range of sports for all abilities but the pinnacle of 2012 has undoubtedly been the performances of our elite athletes in the London Olympic Games."
