Plymouth College – Swimmers bring back medal haul from African Swimming Championships

Plymouth College Swimmer Jamila LunkuseTwo Plymouth College swimmers, Emma de Jager, 11, and Jamila Lunkuse, 15, have won nine medals and one trophy between them at the Cana Zone 3 and 4 African Swimming Championships held in Mozambique. Fourteen African nations took part in the prestigious competition.

Plymouth College Preparatory School pupil, Emma, was swimming for Zambia and clinched three gold and two silver medals. She won the gold medals for 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly and the silvers for 50m and 200m freestyle. Emma was also awarded the Victrix Ludorum for the U12 girls’ age group.

Senior School pupil, Jamila, swims for Uganda. She competed in the 15-16 age group and won 1 gold (100m breast stroke), 2 silver (200m breast stroke and 200m Individual Medley) and 1 bronze medal (50m breast stroke). Later this year Jamila will swim for Uganda in the London 2012 Olympics.

Plymouth College director of swimming, Jon Rudd, said: “This is a very impressive set of results for both girls. They were competing against the best swimmers in Africa and really did their home nations proud.”
