Plymouth College – Swimming medals for Harry in Rio

Plymouth College elite swimmer, Harry Ackland, 16, has returned triumphant from Rio after winning four medals for Plymouth College Medals Harry AcklandGreat Britain.

Identified as a strong potential for the Rio 2016 Olympics, the triple British Champion was selected for the Great Britain team to compete in the Brazilian School Games as part of the partnership between the two countries’ Olympic Committees.

One of just four boys and four girls on the 15-17 years GB team, Harry won gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, silvers in the 100m breaststroke and 4x100m medley, and bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

Harry is part of the unique and hugely successful Plymouth College/Plymouth Leander elite swimming programme, which is also home to Olympic gold medallist, Ruta Meilutyte.

Now in the Lower Sixth, he has been a boarder at Plymouth College since Year 7. The school provides a flexible academic curriculum and extensive pastoral support alongside his swimming training, allowing him to achieve the best he can both in the pool and in the classroom.

“Rio was my first international selection and was a fantastic experience”, said Harry.

“After Christmas I will be preparing for GB trials where I hope to be selected for the European Junior Championships and the World Youth Games, which are both taking place in the summer.”
